The background is gorgeous, it looks brittle, like stained glass. You added warmer tones to the face, so it stands out. Two nit picks: The line on the jaw is distracting, and the mouth seems bigger on his right than his left, maybe he has a crooked mouth in real life? Despite being similar in tone, the hair doesn't blend into the background. The whole thing looks really good.

thankyou for your constructive feedback, the line on his jaw is his beard, and im glad you noticed the difference between the hair and the background, i spent awhile on that to get it right.

I love the brush strokes; the use of different colours, and the use of mainly blue tones, makes the painting more abstract and gives it an edge. Great work <3

And I asked myself about the present: how wide it was, how deep it was, how much was mine to keep.

I like how you mixed in a bit of warmer tones with the cool ones. Also the background looks awesome, especially with the contrast between the different shades of blue. Really lovely painting.

thankyou for looking, i had more warmer tones but found they stood out way too much and had to change some of them but i'm really happy with the balance now

I followed you here from the forum post.
Forgive my spelling errors....

So critique. here goes.

I like the application of paint on the planes of his face, and how the colors describe what is going on there...
I also like the hair, simple strokes that do their job without getting too muddy.

Now for the criticism,
The collaged paper elements don't really add much too it for me, to be honest collaged tissue paper tends to make me just think of sunday crafters. I've never seen it look all that great, and same goes for it here.
Although i suppose it does break him up well from his background... I could try to find a different way of acomplishing this with your next painting? You obviously are learning different kinds of painting application, maybe try something different in that way for the background.

I wish you had continuted to do what you did with the mulitcolored tonal range on his face with his lips and his neck, these areas fall kind of flat. I would also get rid of the line under his chin.

:)

all and all, pretty good! I like it. :)

Also, I am watching you because you said you just started for a degree in art, and I just like to watch fellow students. :)

thankyou for watching me :) The collaged background was a bit of an experiment, i think it adds a nice texture, but i guess the texture doesnt really show here anyway. I agree that i should put some multicoloured bits in his lips, I'm allways experimenting with this. and the line around his chin is his beard.
